Despite no country formally recognizing the Taliban regime, Kabul has appointed Taliban ambassadors to some neighboring countries’ embassies over the past three years.
On Tuesday, Afghanistan’s foreign ministry declared that it “bears no responsibility” for credentials, including passports and visas, issued by missions not aligned with Kabul’s new rulers. This affects embassies in London, Berlin, and the countries of Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Greece, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Canada, and Australia.
The statement advised Afghans living abroad to deal instead with missions affiliated with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the official name the Taliban has given the country under their rule. Pakistan, China, and Russia are among the countries with Afghan embassies operating under Taliban orders.
