The Biden administration has made it clear that democratic principles, the rule of law, and most importantly the will of the people of Bangladesh, need to form the cradle of the interim government, in light of the present pandemonium of political turmoil as a result of the sudden resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amidst violent protests.
Appeal for Democratic Process: In a daily news conference State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said, “We want to see the Bangladeshi people decide the future of the Bangladeshi government,” possibly setting up US policy on democratic transition.
Prime Minister’s Resignation and Aftermath:
Chaotic scenes were set off with the surprise resignation of Prime Minister Hasina and her hasty exfiltration on a military aircraft. Hundreds of protesters rushed and rampaged her house as news reached the streets, fueling anti-government unrest that has killed more than 300 in the last two weeks.
US Monitoring/Response:
He has assured that the United States is closely monitoring the situation, urging that an end to violence is paramount and accountability serves justice for lives lost recently.
Accountability and Investigations:
Miller demanded full and transparent investigation of incidents of violence resulting in death and punishment according to Bangladeshi law. He allayed the fear that the US received any report on asylum request from the former Prime Minister Hasina.
US Position on Interim Government:
Miller elaborated this to have said, “We are of the opinion that it is time for us to take notice of the democratic aspirations of the Bangladeshi p eople and really see an opportunity for democratic government”. He further goes on to assert the close ties the US has with the people of Bangladesh and the democratic process that will be carried out in a freerous manner paying attention to the will of the people in the country.
Statements of White House and NSC:
It should be noted that a spokesperson of the White House National Security Council also directed all to immediately restore peace and called for the respect of democratic rights of the people of Bangladesh, while judging the restraint of the Army along with the others. The Spokesperson also informed he is gravely concerned with reports of casualties and injuries and stressed the need for credible investigations of acts and justice for the victims.
The words by the Biden Administration show vested interest in at least trying to make the government either interim or elected understand and appreciate democracy principles and the interests of having a stable Bangladesh, which is currently faced with a lot of turmoil. A democratic process in nominating the interim government would be, therefore, a perfect resolution with the United States calling for accountability and justice over the spate of violence that happened.
