DHAKA – Bangladesh’s presidency has announced that Nobel laureate and microfinance pioneer Muhammad Yunus has been appointed the head of an interim government following the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to Shahabuddin’s press office, the decision to set up an interim government with Yunus at its head was made during a meeting between President Mohammed Shahabuddin, military leaders, and heads of the Students Against Discrimination group.
The head of the student group, Nahid Islam, came out of the presidential palace after three hours of deliberations with President Shahabuddin Ahmed and told reporters: “The president has sought people’s assistance in overcoming the crisis. The earlier the formation of an interim government, the better to overcome the storm in the country,” Shahabuddin’s office said.
In response to deadly protests which forced Hasina to step down, Shahabuddin also removed the national police chief and put in a new officer, his office said.
Islam described the talks as “productive” and confirmed that Shahabuddin was committed to forming the interim government “as soon as possible.”
