KTM has recently unveiled the much-anticipated 390 SMC R supermoto at EICMA 2024, highlighting its impressive specifications. According to reports, KTM is expected to launch this niche supermoto in India during the second half of 2025, post the launch of the new-generation 390 ADV and 390 Enduro R. Based on the current 390 Duke, the 390 SMC R will command a premium price, likely to be higher than the ex-showroom price of the 390 Duke at ₹3.14 lakh.
Design and Dimensions:
The KTM 390 SMC R features the quintessential supermoto design, which includes a tall stance, high front mudguard, and dirt-bike styling. The motorcycle has a slim profile and comes with a 9-litre fuel tank, which is 6 litres smaller than the 390 Duke’s tank. The 390 SMC R weighs just 154 kg, which is 11 kg lighter than the 390 Duke. However, this 860 mm seat height could be intimidating to Indian riders because it would easily be one of the tallest motorcycles under 500 cc in the country.
Engine and Performance:
The 390 SMC R employs the same single-cylinder 399 cc, liquid-cooled powerplant from the 390 Duke, producing 46 hp at 8,500 rpm and 39 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. The engine is combined with a 6-speed gearbox and a quick-shifter for further performance. The two-piece steel trellis frame, with the bolt-on sub-frame, has been redesigned; the steering head angles, triple clamps, and sub-frame mounts are all different from those of the 390 Duke. Moreover, the new aluminium swingarm makes the motorcycle even more agile.
Suspension and Wheels:
The suspension of the KTM 390 SMC R is a front fork with travel of 230 mm, specifically designed for off-road and supermoto enthusiasts with a 43 mm WP APEX open cartridge. The shock absorber, also an off-set WP APEX is used at the back with travel of 230 mm. The rear suspension is just preload adjustable and the front has rebound and compression adjustment. It has 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Power 6 tyres at 110/70 R17 for the front and 150/60 R17 for the rear, making the bike perform even better by offering superior grip and stability.
Technology and Features
This 390 SMC R motorcycle has a 4.2-inch TFT screen and comes equipped with Bluetooth technology that can sync perfectly with cellphones. Its riding modes vary to three settings – rain, street, and race. Along with this comes a dual-channel ABS with the addition of supermoto for safety and improved handling in rough ride conditions.
The KTM 390 SMC R will be a highly exciting supermoto with lightweight construction, a high-performance engine, and off-road-ready suspension. Even though the bike will launch in India a year from now, it is likely to provide a premium alternative to the 390 Duke for supermoto enthusiasts targeting a niche market. All eyes will focus on how well this new supermoto slots into the Indian market as KTM prepares its 2025 launch.
