The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won Delhi after 26 years as the party retained its hold by gaining a resounding victory in the Delhi Assembly polls. This party has effectively brought an end to the AAP government’s reign over the past ten years at the capital with only 48 of the total 70 seats won. Only 22 AAP managed to do the trick as Congress failed to even open her account in this February 5 poll.
BJP leaders seek meeting with Delhi LG
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva sought an appointment with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena for a meeting with the 48 newly elected MLAs and seven Lok Sabha MPs from Delhi, on the day of the thumping victory. Sachdeva in his letter to the LG stated:
“I, along with the BJP MPs from Delhi and our newly elected 48 MLAs, wish to meet you at an early date. Please allow an appointment at your convenience.”
The meeting will be a forerunner of discussions on forming the government and leadership selection.
Speculations About New Chief Minister Gain Momentum
Now, with BJP garnering a facile majority, speculation over the next Chief Minister of Delhi has heightened. Several senior leaders who have won their respective seats are being considered for the top post. One of the front-runners is Parvesh Verma, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma.
Verma emerged as a giant slayer in the elections, defeating AAP convenor and former three-time Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in his constituency. His victory has significantly boosted his chances of being selected as the next CM. However, other senior leaders from the BJP are also in contention, and the party is likely to make a formal announcement soon.
Government Formation Expected After PM Modi’s Return
Sources suggest that the formation of the government will build further momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from a foreign visit. The top brass of the BJP is likely to hold a key meeting in the coming days over its pick for chief minister and distribution of ministerial portfolios.
Decade-old Rule for AAP Cuts That Up In Crushing Defeat
The results marked a significant setback for the Aam Aadmi Party, which had been in power in Delhi since 2015. Under Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership, the party had won a landslide victory in 2015 (67/70 seats) and a dominant win in 2020 (62/70 seats). However, in 2025, AAP saw a drastic reduction in its support, managing to win just 22 seats.
It has been amid many controversies and scams in the Kejriwal government, like corruption allegations, the liquor policy scam, and voters’ disappointment over governance and infrastructure issues.
Congress fails to make a comeback
The Congress, once the dominant force in Delhi politics, continued its poor electoral performance. The party failed to win a single seat, marking its third consecutive defeat in the national capital. Despite efforts to regain relevance, the party struggled to make an impact in these elections.
With the landslide victory of BJP, all eyes are now on the formation of the new government and the announcement of the Chief Minister. The official swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place in the coming weeks, marking a new political chapter in Delhi.
