In anticipation of the Aero India Show 2025, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has ordered the closure of meat stalls, non-vegetarian hotels, and restaurants within a 13-kilometer radius of the Yelahanka Air Force Station. The closure will be from January 23 to February 17, 2025, ahead of the event scheduled from February 10 to 14.
Reasons for the Ban
BBMP authorities cited safety concerns as the primary reason behind this decision. According to the civic body, the consumption and disposal of non-vegetarian food, especially in public spaces, attract scavenger birds like kites. These birds pose a significant risk of mid-air accidents, which could jeopardize the safety of the air show participants and spectators.
Official Statement from BBMP
The BBMP issued a public notice stating:
It is intimated that Aero India-2025 show is scheduled to be held at the Air Force Station Yelahanka from 10.02.2025 to 14.02.2025. All meat/chicken/fish shops will be closed and the serving/sale of non-vegetarian dishes would be prohibited with in a radius of 13 km of Yelahanka, from 23rd January, 2025 to 17th February 2025,
The statement further added that any contravention of this order shall attract punishment under the BBMP Act-2020 and Rule 91 of the Indian Aircraft Rules 1937.
Importance of Aero India 2025
The 15th edition of Aero India will take place at the Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bengaluru, covering various exhibits related to aerospace and defense. Defense industry leaders will be converging on the event, which will be marked by prominent activities including a Defence Ministers’ Conclave, a CEOs’ round-table, and an India Pavilion, besides a trade fair of aerospace companies attracting exhibitors from all over the world.
This biennial air show, first held in 1996, has grown to be Asia’s premier aerospace exhibition, offering a unique opportunity for the industry to showcase products, innovations, and services. It also serves as a critical platform for stakeholders in the aerospace and defense industries to discuss future developments.
Implications for Local Businesses
The ban on selling non-vegetarian food will affect many local businesses, including meat vendors, restaurants, and hotels, all of which rely heavily on non-vegetarian dishes. Despite the inconvenience for these businesses, the BBMP’s move underscores the importance of safety during such a high-profile event.
