With just two weeks left before the start of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, doubts have surfaced over whether Pakistan is ready to host the event. Social media videos reveal that there is still much work to be done at a number of venues, raising doubts. The International Cricket Council has, however, waived the “exclusivity period” for Pakistan in hosting the tournament.
What is the Exclusivity Period Rule?
Host countries are normally expected to hand over venues to the ICC three weeks before a major event starts. During these three weeks, the ICC handles branding, sponsorship placements, and venue checks. However, the rule does not apply in the case of Pakistan.
The Special Exception:
The Times of India, in a report, found out that Pakistan has been given the exemption and would be allowed to host a tri-series between Pakistan, South Africa, and New Zealand from 8 February till 14 February. Thus, the stadiums would be available only after 14 February for the ICC to conduct their preparation since the tournament begins on 19 February.
Situation in Dubai:
Dubai, where all India games will be played, also has a short preparation window. The Dubai stadium is not available before February 10 as it will host the ILT20 matches. So, the ICC will have to prepare for the event there also within a short window.
ICC Clears Activities During Exclusivity Window
According to a source, the ICC has given the PCB permission to host the tri-series and all other activities on the premises within the exclusivity period if they seek prior approval. The ILT20 is also using the stadium in Dubai during the exclusivity period.
ICC Visits and Trust
Despite these scheduling issues, the ICC has conducted several inspection visits to all the venues and is reportedly satisfied with the progress. The governing body is confident that the venues will be ready in time for the tournament.
Though the timeline for venue finalization is very tight, the decision of the ICC to waive the exclusivity period shows that they think Pakistan will be ready to host the 2025 Champions Trophy. The preparation time is less, and there are concerns over it, but the approval from the ICC indicates that the final stages of venue preparation will be up to the mark.
