In a leaked update by a Weibo tipster, it’s reported that Apple is to add major upgrades on the cameras on the new iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The redesign on the back side of the flagship iPhones will take place and could be having horizontal camera setup designs.
Camera upgrades:
48-Megapixel Telephoto Camera: There will be a 48-megapixel telephoto camera that offers 5x optical zoom on the iPhone 17 Pro models. This would be a step up from the 12-megapixel telephoto lens featured on the iPhone 16 Pro models.
24-Megapixel Selfie Camera: Both the iPhone 17 Pro models will also boast a new 24-megapixel selfie camera. This will replace the 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera that has been featured in the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Previous Leaks and Predictions
Ming-Chi Kuo’s Prediction
In early January 2024, famous Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had already made a prediction regarding the iPhone 17 models and their 24-megapixel selfie camera.
Telephoto Lens and Design: Last November it was announced the iPhone 17 series would equip the Tetraprism telephoto lens and will offer optical zoom at a 5x and will be found only on Pro models. Besides, some rumor said that maybe the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air may be the first non-flagship models to hold a telephoto camera.
Other Expected Upgrades:
Under-Display Face ID: The iPhone 17 Pro series may also carry under-display Face ID technology for a smaller camera cutout.
Processor and RAM: The new iPhone 17 series is believed to come in with Apple’s A19 processor, while the Pro models will run on the A19 Pro processor. The Pro model may come in with 12GB of RAM, while the standard iPhone 17 may come with 8GB of RAM.
These upgrades and leaks suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro models might be a giant leap forward in terms of camera performance and other features. The iPhone 17 series is likely to hit the markets later in 2025, though the specific launch details are yet to be confirmed.
