On the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Kamala Harris declared her first actions would be to seek a ceasefire and to free hostages. “Now is the time to get a hostage deal and a ceasefire deal done,” Harris exclaimed to her supporters. Then she told the crowd, “I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself and ensure it has the ability to do so.”
Harris sounded an indeed apt tone of humanitarian concern on Gaza: “What has happened in Gaza over the last 10 months is devastating. So many innocent lives lost, desperate people fleeing for safety. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking.” At the same time, she called upon what is necessary: to bring an end to this conflict in a way that provides security for Israel, and dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination for the Palestinian people.
Kamala Harris Assails Trump’s Foreign Policy
Kamala Harris also saved some acerbic comments in her speech for Donald Trump’s foreign policy, particularly on NATO and Ukraine. “As president, I will stand strong with Ukraine and our NATO allies,” Harris said, drawing a contrast with Trump’s frequent criticism of NATO and his public praise for Russian President
Commitment to Foreign and Domestic Policy
In a speech heavy on policy principles, Kamala Harris resisted getting into specifics, which may well lead to pressure in the weeks ahead. But for many, her speech was uplifting at least, after days of protests by Palestinian supporters upset at not being better represented on the convention stage.
Harris’ commitment to securing Israel, ending the war in Gaza, and standing tall with Ukraine reflects her big foreign policy vision. But what the voters will be looking for, as the campaigns heat up, is how she intends to carry out the policies if she were to become the first female President of the United States.
