A protest against a homeless shelter in Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst neighborhood went wildly out of control when a viral video on X appeared to show New York City
ABC7 New York reported that, in the video, 38-year-old Councilwoman Susan Zhuang is allegedly pushing against a police barricade and reportedly bit the blood of Officer Frank DiGiacomo, the Chief of Patrol.
On Thursday, hundreds of supporters greeted Zhuang as she arrived at a Gravesend community center, chanting her name. She told the crowd that she felt her arrest had been unjust. She said that was because of the conduct of the NYPD, which turned what should have been a peaceful protest violent.
Mistreatment by our NYPD – whom I always support – needs to be stopped. The AAPI hate, Asian hate in any form, needs to be ended. it is not unique to myself; many members of the Asian community have been subjected to this excessive enforcement and mistreatment by our NYPD,” Zhuang told ABC7 New York.
Residents have been fighting the city’s plan to create a 150-person homeless shelter for men at the facility, citing concerns about crime. Wednesday’s protest turned chaotic and one witness said Zhuang was trying to protect an 81-year-old female from getting hurt. The woman’s daughter-who appeared to be in tears-told the witness, Larry Hi, that if Zhuang hadn’t intervene her mother could have been severely harmed or killed.
