According to people familiar with the matter, Nvidia is developing a version of its flagship AI chip that it intends to sell in China, its design ensuring it does not fall under current U.S. export restrictions. It is temporarily being referred to as the “B20,” and it will be sold under that number with the help of Inspur, its largest distributor partner there.
Blackwell Series and the B200 Chip
In March, Nvidia unveiled its new generation of chips known as “Blackwell”, which the company says is on track for volume production later this year. Among them, the B200 chip will boast 30 times the performance of its predecessor for tasks involving answering chatbot queries, according to the company.
Details on the B20 Chip and Distribution
The new chip intended for China is known as the B20 and, in collaboration with Inspur, is currently in development for launch and distribution within the Chinese market. However, no official announcement has been made by Nvidia in this regard.
Export Controls and Market Adjustments
In light of the tightened United States export controls beginning this year – to prevent an advance in supercomputing that could give China an edge, militarily speaking – Nvidia has now developed three chips, tailored for the Chinese market.
Comments from Nvidia and Inspur
A Nvidia spokesperson declined to comment. Inspur did not return requests for further comment.
