Lima, Peru – Peru’s foreign ministry has ordered Venezuelan diplomats to leave the country within 72 hours, on Monday, after Venezuela’s ruling party declared an election victory that the opposition in Venezuela and also independent pollsters are saying is widely disputed.
Official Statement and Actions
In a statement, the Peruvian ministry gave as its reason for the expulsion “the serious and arbitrary decisions taken today by the Venezuelan regime.” Peru had announced earlier in the day that it would not stand for “violations of the popular will of Venezuelans” and had recalled its ambassador from there.
Peru’s stance brings into sharp focus increasing regional tensions following contentious election results in Venezuela.
