Flooding and Displacement
Manila: Heavy rains generated by Typhoon Gaemi brought fresh devastation to the Philippine capital and its outskirts as the downpour displaced thousands of people, shut down schools and offices, and grounded all flights. A state of calamity was declared for the region. This storm strengthened the seasonal monsoon rains that resulted in numerous landslides and floods but did not make landfall.
DAMAGE AND RESPONSE
The national disaster agency recorded a total of 12 deaths and more than 600,000 evacuees. Water reached neck-deep in some areas. Philippine Coast Guard evacuated 260 passengers and 16 boats in various ports, while airlines grounded 114 flights in Manila. Financial markets were shut down with the inclement weather as well.
Government and Emergency Response
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. mobilized disaster relief agencies to help communities deal with the crisis and ordered them to stockpile supplies in preparation for hard-to-reach communities. Mayors from 16 cities in the Greater Manila region have requested emergency funds to address the disaster.
Rescue Operations in Play
Rescuers in Marikina, a city by the river, have waded into waist-deep waters to rescue residents via rubber dinghies. Some evacuees have sought refuge in churches, amidst statues and the settings of Catholic saints.
