In a knife attack at a supermarket in Shanghai, three people were killed and 15 others injured. The suspect, a 37-year-old man surnamed Lin, was arrested on the spot immediately after the incident. Local police said the attack was prompted by a personal financial dispute. Three victims died from their injuries in the hospital, while 15 others were injured but not seriously.
Knife attacks in China have become commonplace in a country that has very tight gun-control laws; knives are becoming more of an easily accessible weapon in committing violent crimes. In May 2024, a previous incident had resulted in a man killing eight people in the city of Xiaogan. In the past years, such attacks have also been reported at schools in China.
