Sydney, Australia — A stabbing attack in Sydney early Sunday left four people injured, including a police officer. It was the latest in a spate of knife assaults that has troubled Australia’s largest city so far this year.
Attacker Arrested
The suspect who fled the scene following a stabbing attack in Sydney was apprehended by police. Authorities said in a statement there was no continuing danger to the community. New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Catley reassured the public that the situation was under control.
Details of the Incident
The Sydney stabbing attack came after a “domestic-related” incident with a collision between two vehicles in the southern suburb of Engadine. According to Police Superintendent Donald Faulds, who spoke during a televised news conference, the attacker had a boxcutter. Aerial footage from the ABC showed a crash scene where police tape was used to cordon off two vehicles.
Recent Rise of Knife Attacks
Sydney has 5 million residents and experienced a concerning spate of knife crimes over the past year. Violence sparked tougher knife laws from the New South Wales government. In June, state parliament legislated that police would be allowed to use electronic metal-detecting scanners to check people without a warrant in high-risk areas like shopping centers, sporting venues, and public transport stations.
Past Incidents in 2024
This stabbing incident in Sydney also comes after a horrific incident in April when six people were killed and 12 others injured in a knife attack at a mall in Bondi, an upscale suburb of Sydney. In fact, the increase in these types of attacks has raised concerns among residents and police alike.
