Prime Minister Narendra Modi left no one in doubt about India’s commitment to renewable energy by officiating the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investor’s Meet (RE-INVEST) 2024, a decisive step toward sustainability. The PM addressing Gandhinagar, Gujarat, reiterated the nation’s focus on solar, wind, nuclear, and hydropower in order to come forward to secure the country’s energy future and lead the world.
India’s vision for sustainable energy According to Prime Minister Modi, “We don’t have vast reserves of oil and gas, we are not energy producers. Therefore, we have focused on solar power, wind power, nuclear, and hydropower to secure our future.” By doing so, India is outlining its very own sustainable energy journey toward achieving energy security for the next 1,000 years.
Prime Minister Hails India’s Leadership:
Among G20 Nations in Green Energy Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that the leadership of the country among G20 countries in green energy is at its forefront. India is already proving global benchmarks by setting ambitious targets like 500 GW of renewable power by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070. “Our aim is not just to reach the top but to remain on top.”
Recent Green Energy Milestones:
In the space of green energy, new milestones were achieved in the nation under PM Modi’s third term when the first 100 days were completed. These include launching the Offshore Green Energy Policy which has promised to pump ₹7,000 crore in its coffers under the Vibrant Gas Funding Scheme. Another area that finds focus is Hydropower, which aims at a production level of 31,000 MW, meant to invest ₹12,000 crore for the purpose.
Progress Since COP26:
In COP26 at Glasgow 2021 India had agreed to secure at least half of its power through renewable sources by 2030. According to Climate Action Tracker, India ranks fourth in the world for new renewable energy capacity by 2022. The country has strongly advanced its solar energy capacity. Its solar capacity has increased by 30 times in the last nine years and is at 89.4 GW as of August 2024.
International Cooperation for Solar Power Leadership beyond borders indeed. So is the case with India, which, after creating ISA in partnership with France, is still a leading player in international cooperation for solar energy. Today, headquartered in India, ISA has 99 countries on board and plans to mobilize $1,000 billion in solar investments by 2030.
India is taking its first steps toward establishing a green, sustainable future at both the national and global levels. It is setting its sights on 2030 and beyond, so that India can be one of the world leaders in renewable energy-a beacon of hope to show the world that sustainable growth is not only possible but achievable.
