The Assam government arrested 416 individuals in the third phase of its crackdown to eradicate child marriage. It began its operation on December 21-22, 2024, during the night, marking the state’s significant step forward in the fight against child marriage. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrests and said that 335 cases had been registered in connection with the crackdown. The arrested individuals were scheduled to appear in court on Sunday, December 24, 2024.

Previous Phases of the Crackdown
The ongoing operation is part of Assam’s multi-phase initiative against child marriage, which started in early 2023. The state has already conducted two rounds of enforcement before this current phase:

First Phase (February 2023):

3,483 persons arrested
4,515 cases registered

Second Phase (October 2023):

915 persons arrested
710 cases registered
These phases targeted the evils of child marriage that had been in the state of Assam for decades. The operations were on perpetrators of child marriages as well as families arranging the marriage.

Statement by Chief Minister and Promise
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that the government was firm in its resolve to end child marriage in Assam. In a statement, he said, “Assam continues its fight against child marriage. We will continue to take bold steps to end this social evil.” This statement shows the government’s firm stand on the issue, which has far-reaching social, cultural, and legal implications.

Impact on the Ground and Legal Proceedings
The arrested persons of the third phase of the crackdown would be produced before the judiciary. Assam Police along with the judiciary are acting to ensure that child marriages are dealt with as any other illegal activity with law enforcement against those indulging in such practices while strengthening the legal age of marriage in India.

Social and Cultural Implications
While the crackdown has received support from those advocating for children’s rights, it has also sparked controversy. Some critics argue that the operations disproportionately affect certain communities and lead to the disruption of families. The practice of child marriage has deep cultural roots in Assam and other parts of India, and the aggressive enforcement has led to debates over how best to balance legal enforcement with social reform.

Continued Government Efforts
The Assam government, under Chief Minister Sarma, has announced that the crackdown will continue with further phases lined up to eradicate child marriage altogether. The government also assured support to the families who are affected by the crackdown, such as implementing education and awareness programs regarding the harmful effects of child marriage.

Assam’s continued operation against child marriage is an important move in addressing the deeply ingrained social problem. While the operation has had immense positive and negative impacts, it clearly depicts the commitment of the government toward ensuring the welfare and rights of children in the state. Assam is working towards a safer environment for its younger population through continued legal action and social reform.
