The corpse of a 74-year-old woman, identified as Maga, has been discovered after she was struck by a python in the shockingly terrifying incident that occurred in central Indonesia. The incident happened in Padang Lambe, one of the districts in Palopo city, South Sulawesi province. The python struck her and killed her. Later, her daughter found her body lying near the family home in a village, while the python was just metres away from the body.
Details of Attack
- A police spokesman in Palopo, Supriadi, said the woman was likely killed both by the tight squeeze of the four-meter python and its bites. There were bite marks on the head and legs; those showed the intensity of the attack. According to authorities, the snake apparently had tried to swallow the victim but was stopped by villagers. Community Response
- The villagers immediately hunted down and killed the python after finding it near the body of Maga. The snake had swallowed the woman up to her shoulders before it spat her out, said Awaluddin, head of Padang Lambe district. The tragic incident just so happened to become the third deadly python attack in South Sulawesi province in three consecutive months.
- Increasing Python Attacks in Indonesia
- While rare, attacks by large constrictor snakes have been on the rise lately in Indonesia. In fact, police last month found a woman dead inside the stomach of a python in the village of Siteba in South Sulawesi. In June this year, another woman was found inside the belly of a reticulated python in a different district in the same province. A similar accident happened on the island of Sulawesi in 2018 and in 2017, bringing into question the threat from python attacks, which does seem to be on its rise.
- Authorities Urge Caution
- After these latest attacks, authorities in South Sulawesi are asking citizens to be very careful, especially in areas that are considered the residency of big snakes. They call upon all to raise awareness and preparedness to avoid further tragedies.
