Gaza – Hamas, in strongly critical language, described US President Joe Biden’s recent comments as “misleading” after he suggested Hamas was backing away from a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. In a statement on Tuesday, Hamas expressed “great astonishment and disapproval” at Biden’s remarks. It insisted they do not reflect the movement’s stance, which is to achieve a cessation of aggression, according to Xinhua news agency.
Hamas Criticises Biden over Gaza Ceasefire Comments and U.S. Bias
The Hamas criticism of Biden’s remarks on the Gaza ceasefire goes further to point out that biased partiality towards Israel is being displayed by the U.S. It claims that Biden’s remarks amount to a new American green light for Israel to commit more crimes against defenseless civilians in Gaza. Hamas reaffirmed commitment to a cease-fire and placed blame on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying he was blocking negotiations by setting new preconditions.
Despite Biden’s comments on the Gaza ceasefire, Hamas stated that it was committed to the July 2 truce with mediators Qatar and Egypt, after the former’s initial statement and the resolution by the UN Security. It urged these mediators to consider their commitments and to use pressure on Israel to comply with the agreement of the ceasefire.
Biden’s Charge in Perspective against Hamas’ Gaza Ceasefire Comments
President Biden late Monday evening accused Hamas of “backing away” from what would be a hostage deal with Israel in exchange for an end to the conflict in Gaza. Biden, following the Democratic National Convention, told the deal was “still in play, but you can’t predict,” while adding that Hamas had pulled back from the potential negotiations, according to reports from Israeli media.
