Jerusalem: A 63-year-old Hamas leader from West Bank, Mustafa Muhammad Abu Ara died in Israeli custody, Palestinian authorities and the militant group said on Friday. Abu Ara died after being transferred from a prison in southern Israel to a hospital, a joint statement from the Palestinian Authority’s prisoners affairs body and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club watchdog read.
Abu Ara was detained in October while already in poor health, according to the Palestinian body and watchdog, who said he was subjected to torture and starvation during his detention.
Israel’s military did not immediately comment when approached for a response.
In response, the Israeli military said it “rejects outright allegations concerning systematic abuse of detainees,” adding that it acts within international law.
