Beirut, 25th September 2024: Hezbollah confirmed the death of its commander, Ibrahim Mohammed Kobeissi, following an Israeli military strike in the Ghobeiri area of Beirut’s southern suburbs. He had been “eliminated,” according to the Israeli army, which was describing him as a main figure in Hezbollah’s operations over missiles and rockets.

Hezbollah said Kobeissi was “martyred on the road to Jerusalem”, a term the group reserves for fighters killed by attacks from Israeli forces. The Israeli military said Kobeissi led several rocket units and a precision-guided missile unit and enjoyed close ties with top leaders in Hezbollah’s military.

The strike killed at least six people and injured 15 others, the health ministry in Lebanon said. At least two other commanders from Kobeissi’s unit were killed in the operation, Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said.

This targeted strike happens in the midst of heightened tension and successive crossfire between Hezbollah and Israel since the eruption of the Gaza conflict in last October. Just a day before the assassination, Israel conducted another operation in that region. The third ranking leader of Hezbollah said that its third ranking leader, Ali Karake, survived a different attack because he could transfer to a safe place after an airstrike happened earlier.

The recent spate of violence has sent alarm signals at the prospect of all-out war between them, especially since both have accelerated their military actions.
