ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN: Jailed former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan will be applying for the post of Oxford University Chancellor, an adviser of his on international affairs, Sayed Zulfi Bukhari, has said. This has come at a time when Imran Khan remains incarcerated in Adiala Jail over various corruption and incitement cases.
On Thursday, Mr. Bukhari said to Geo News that the Chancellor’s post became vacant because 80-year-old Lord Patten had resigned after serving for 21 years.
The race against him will include former UK Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Boris Johnson.
Background and Qualification
Imran Khan did his graduation from Keble College, Oxford, in 1972 with the combination of Economics and Politics. During his stay at Oxford, he was the Captain of the University’s cricket team. Khan made his debut for Pakistan in Test cricket during 1971 and became the Chancellor of Bradford University from 2005 to 2014.
Mr. Bukhari publicized the demand for Imran Khan’s candidacy, saying: “We will announce it publicly once we get a go-ahead from Khan and start the signature campaign for it.
Role of a Chancellor and Election Process
The Chancellor at Oxford University is a ceremonial head that rules over significant events. Election to this post is by Convocation, a body of all the former students who have passed out of the University having been admitted to a degree other than an honorary one, members of Congregation, and retired staff who were members of Congregation on retirement. Invitations have been sent out online for the post of Chancellor, which will lead to one of the most competitive elections at the university.
