New York – Six years to 2030, and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals woefully off track, the Summit of the Future needs to re-ignite the global ambition towards achieving some of these critical targets. New York is back, for one momentous week in September 2024, when, the world leaders shall come together at UN headquarters to discuss global challenges and crises affecting nearly all parts of the world.

Key cooperation fields

According to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres international cooperation is needed for dealing with these challenges. For his part, five issues will be prominent at the summit, including:

Sustainable development and financing
International peace and security
Digital cooperation and technology governance
Empowerment of youth and future generations

UN system reform

A core theme is the urgent need for funding sustainable development, with lower-income countries lacking access to affordable, long-term funding. Acceleration in these areas is seen as necessary for the achievement of SDGs.

Tackle great-power competition for global peace.

The summit is going to take into observation the rising tensions among global powers, among them US-Russia and China relations, among many more. International relations must ensure that it follows the charter of the UN as far as resolution of disputes, promotion of peace, and cooperation are concerned to dispel any growing escalations.

The summit should mark the future of technology, thus empowering the youth.

As digital technologies with the names of artificial intelligence seem to dominate the globe, global governance would become pertinent in responsibly steering the implementation of these revolutions. More importantly, quality education to be guaranteed for success for all young people across strata of life needs to be addressed for that future generation.

Reforming the UN system for a fairer future

There will be a vision for reforming the form of the United Nations to reflect all peoples. Increasing women’s participation and representation would be key; stronger women’s leadership positions are necessary to look upon the multiple challenges facing the world through a gender-responsive lens.

Our future in multilateralism

An acronym in every sense, at its very core, the Future Summit is a call to multilateral collective action. Through the multilateral approach, the world can overcome the unprecedented challenges of today and build a sustainable, peaceful, and equitable future for all.
