Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley resigned from the party following an internal party inquiry that he described as “seriously flawed.” Stanley, who has been a 40-year veteran of Sinn Féin and a member of the Dáil since 2011, actually compared the party’s inquiry into his case to a “kangaroo court.”

He further said he had lost confidence in the party due to how it and other issues were managed in the wider organization. He will remain as an independent republican TD.

This is the second resignation in a week, following Patricia Ryan, who announced she would be leaving the Kildare South seat in Sinn Féin, claiming she was “not satisfied with the current direction of the party.” The resignations are hot on the heels of some controversy for Sinn Féin, including criticism over the handling of two press officers who have provided character references for a colleague under investigation for child sex offenses.
