On October 13, 2024, Nicaragua severed official diplomatic relations with Israel, labeling Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon as fascist and genocidal.” The move comes at a time of rising tensions in the Middle East after Israel increased its military attacks against Gaza and Lebanon, particularly in southern Lebanon.

This would also align with its policy of showing solidarity with Palestine, as the Nicaraguan government was informed of further regional repercussions of such a rupture, including threats to Syria, Yemen, and Iran. The country’s Congress voted on a resolution calling for this diplomatic move on the anniversary of the Gaza conflict, which so far has claimed many civilian victims.

This step places Latin America in another list of countries that stand strong in their condemnation of Israel’s military offensive, and leaders such as Brazil President Lula and Chile President Boric are examples of those who have also condemned the performance by Israel. In fact, Nicaragua had earlier filed a complaint against Germany with the International Court of Justice, which asked the court to stop Germany’s military support to Israel.
