Porticello, Italy – Search efforts resumed Thursday for the last missing person following the sinking of a superyacht identified as “Bayesian” off the coast of Sicily. The yacht, carrying UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch, went down in a storm before dawn on Monday. A fifth body has now been recovered from the wreck by divers; six are presumed dead.
Specialist divers, working with an underwater robot, have labored night and day to find and recover the victims. On Wednesday, four bodies were pulled out of the wreck, and a fifth one was recovered Thursday morning, according to AFP reporters on the scene. The search for the last person still unaccounted for continues.
The tragedy occurred when the Bayesian took on water in the storm and sent the guests to their cabins, where they remained trapped. One body recovered was presumed to be the yacht’s chef, which happened shortly after the vessel sank. The survivors, including Mike Lynch, were pulled from the stormy waters by the coast guard from Italy.
Sicilian Yacht Disaster Raises Questions
The sinking of the Bayesian raised concerns about the situation on the sea and what really happened when this disaster struck. “Instead, it took on water with the guests still in the cabin. They went into a trap, those poor people were like mice,” said one of the rescuers, underlining the tragic fate of the victims.
The investigation is continuing, but the main tasks in hand are to find the last missing person and find out the reasons for the sudden sinking of the yacht.
Heartbreak and tragedy continue to unfold amidst the continuous search and recovery operations since Bayesian went down. Six lives were lost, and one is still missing-minds numbed by this tragedy that struck even in the most unimaginably luxurious surroundings. The cause of this disaster is yet to be determined by authorities as the victims and their families remain on many people’s minds.
