US Approves Sale of $3.5 Billion in Apache Helicopters to South Korea:
The US has approved the sale of up to 36 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to South Korea, along with missiles and other warheads. The estimated cost for this procurement is approximately $3.5 billion. According to the DSCA, the Monday sale of these items would improve South Korean military capabilities to deter both existing and developing threats.
Increasing South Korea’s Levels of Defense
The DSCA concluded this sale would enhance the Republic of Korea’s ability to deter adversaries and participate in regional operations. The proposed sale will improve the security of a Major Non-NATO Ally which is a key partner in ensuring stability in the Indo-Pacific region. This region is a critical area in which the United States seeks continuing political stability and economic progress.
Pending Congressional Approval:
The sale has been cleared by the U.S. State Department and the DSCA has notified Congress, which must now grant approval for the sale. Major contractors associated with the sale include Boeing and Lockheed Martin, two of the major players in the defense industry.
Timing with Joint Military Exercises:
This is also the first-day announcement of the Ulchi Freedom Shield-a large-scale annual military drill that takes place between the U.S. and South Korea, featuring thousands of military personnel. It began on the same day as the announcement and is supposed to last through to August 29.
