LONDON — UK police have arrested more than 1,000 people in connection with riots that have swept England over the past two weeks, officials said Tuesday.

Progress Report from the National Police Chiefs’ Council

The National Police Chiefs’ Council announced on X that police across the nation have achieved a far-reaching, significant breakthrough in arresting those who had been involved in the recent violent unrest.

Charges and Court Proceedings

For now at least 575 have been formally charged, while courts are working their way as quickly as possible through cases emanating from the unrest. Those riots, which tore through dozens of towns and cities in England and Northern Ireland from early last week, began after the tragic stabbing of three girls on July 29. Misinformation about the identity of the alleged perpetrator further fueled the violence into far-right riots and online hate speech, for which several people have been arrested in recent days.

Response of the Judiciary and Government

The UK judiciary has wasted no time, handing out long sentences as the situation started to come under control over the weekend.

Notable Cases

A 13-year-old girl, one of the youngest so far to appear before a court of law, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to threatening unlawful violence outside an asylum seeker accommodation in Aldershot, in the south of England.

Honey also pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary after participating in looting several stores during the unrest.
