WASHINGTON – The US Department of State announced Thursday new sanctions against one Chinese research institute and several companies over their alleged involvement in supplying the ballistic missile program of Pakistan. The action was similar to the one declared in October 2023 against China-based firms for providing items applicable to missiles to Pakistan.
Details of the Sanctions
In a statement, the State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller named Beijing Research Institute of Automation for Machine Building Industry as the targeted entity of the US, stating it had been involved in the procurement of equipment related to Pakistan’s rocket motor testing including its systems, Shaheen-3 and Ababeel. The equipment also had possible applications for larger missile systems.
Three Chinese firms were under the radar of sanctions, namely:
- Hubei Huachangda Intelligent Equipment Co
- Universal Enterprise
- Xi’an Longde Technology Development Co
Pakistan-based Innovative Equipment and a Chinese national were also designated for knowingly transferring equipment related to missile technology in contravention of international restrictions.
US Commitment to Countering Proliferation
Miller emphasized the commitment of the US towards countering missile technology proliferation. “As today’s actions demonstrate, the United States will continue to act against proliferation and associated procurement activities of concern, wherever they occur,” Miller said in the statement.
Background
Last October 2023, the US similarly imposed sanctions on three other Chinese firms for providing missile components to Pakistan-a signal of Washington’s growing concerns over the proliferation of advanced military technologies.
No Immediate Comment from China or Pakistan
The embassies of both China and Pakistan in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the sanctions.
