Stockholm: WHO is warning that more cases of the Clade 1 mpox virus, previously known as monkeypox, are likely to appear in Europe after Sweden announced the first confirmed case outside of Africa.
Global Connectivity Increases Risk of Spread
The WHO European regional office said in a statement the latest case was significant because “the confirmation of Clade 1 mpox in Sweden underscores the interconnected nature of our world. We can expect more imported cases in the European region in the days and weeks ahead.”
Sweden’s Case Illustrates Growing Concerns
Detection of Clade 1 mpox by Sweden marks a critical juncture, as this is the first time this particular strain has been detected outside the African continent. The case has sounded an alert for health authorities on the need for vigilance and preparedness across the European region.
WHO Urges European Countries to Remain Vigilant
The WHO thus called upon European countries to improve both their monitoring systems and raise awareness among the general public as a way of tackling a likely spread of mpox Clade 1. It is an organization further working in close collaboration with health authorities through identification and timely responses to new cases.
